Teacher morale is an important issue, that is also derived more and more from societal attacks. We simply are not valued. People's perception of teachers is a fantastically easy job, where you 'show up' and talk in class, go home, and get the summers off. The real picture is working well into the night, often weekends, and having to take another job in the summer just because starting salaries are so low and you have student loans or a family to help support.

I'm not sure why teachers are portrayed so poorly in the media, but until we are valued, teachers will always feel terrible. I think the societal attitudes trickle down to administrators, and pay is largely determined by perceived value.

I often say, that if I had to do it all over again and get a doctorate...I would have just done an MBA. I'd be certainly be making more with far less effort.

I agree with you entirely, Daniel and the boredom and disengagement you refer to in paragraph 2 manifest in behavioural problems in school. These problems have the potential to simmer in 'the pot with the lid on' and ultimately we will pay the social cost..

In his book, "Learning in the Emotional Rooms, John Joseph aspires to create "classrooms that are uplifting to the spirit". Until we can guarantee purposeful learning that ensures academic rigour that challenges and engages students, such a vision remains a pipe dream.

What puzzles me is, with so many committed educators expressing their philosophical oppposition to "testucation", why are we acquiescing to the misinformed dictates of education systems?
